Staff Reviews

The setting for this story is brilliant for the family situation. Alaska can make or break a person and the author never lets the reader forget that Alaska is a very dangerous place to live. I enjoyed all the lush descriptions, even the ones full of danger. The writing makes it easy to imagine the scenes and the chill in the air is something I actually felt while reading warm in my bed.

This story is gripping and full of emotion.

Two things I will point out for those of you on the fence about this book. One, this book is long. It takes place over more than a decade and it will take you places that aren’t always comfortable. There were parts where I was sure the family situation would come to a head and then it didn’t, which added to my tension knowing it was inevitable.

The second thing I need to tell you is to keep some tissues handy. It’s not for the reason you probably think, but you will need them. Maybe like me, your eyes will drip without your say-so at several scenes while reading this book.

This story touches on the actual costs of war once the soldier comes, the struggles of living with a family member who has PTSD, and the lengths people will go threw to preserve a memory. This was a brilliant book I will not soon forget and I highly recommend it.

“Kristin Hannah's The Great Alone is a powerful, compelling story of survival - survival of the natural elements and of the human spirit. It's 1974, and 13-year-old Leni Allbright lives with her devoted mother, Cora, and abusive father, Ernt, who was a prisoner of war during Vietnam. America is changing after the war, and Ernt thinks their best chance at a fresh start is to move off the grid, to America's last frontier - Alaska. Grizzlies, wolves, and dropping temperatures are Leni's worries outside of her family's cabin, but as Ernt's battle with his demons rages on, it's no safer inside. The result is a beautifully descriptive, heart-wrenching adventure.”
